The man and a friend were apparently trying to copy a video they watched on Instagram of a person attempting the challenge.
A man in North Smithfield, R.I. was hospitalized with severe burns Sept. 6 after he lit himself on fire for a TikTok challenge, fire officials said.
The 18-year-old was with a 16-year-old boy while attempting the challenge, which involved pouring gasoline on themselves, lighting themselves on fire, and jumping off a railroad trestle into the Slatersville Reservoir below, North Smithfield Fire Chief David Chartier told Boston.com.
The man can be seen jumping off the trestle engulfed in flames in a video obtained by WJAR.
The man, whose name has not been publicly released, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with second- and third-degree burns, according to Chartier. The 16-year-old who he was with was not injured.
The 16-year-old told police that he and the other male were copying a video they watched on Instagram of a person lighting themselves on fire and jumping into the water, according to a report obtained by The Boston Globe. Though the trestle above the reservoir is private property, no charges have been filed for trespassing.
