Two men face murder charges in the deadly shooting of 18-year-old G’Kiyah Lewis in Mattapan.
Two men have been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old Malden High School senior in Mattapan, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office announced.
G’Kiyah Lewis was shot on Oct. 11 when gunmen opened fire on a group of people sitting on a porch on Hiawatha Road, according to officials. Lewis was struck in the head and torso and later died from her injuries on Nov. 7. Two other people were also shot in the incident, but survived.
On Friday, Kwessi Silcott, 20, of Mattapan, was arraigned on first-degree murder charges in Boston Municipal Court, according to a Boston Globe report. Silcott was arrested on Thursday night after turning himself in to authorities following the issuance of a warrant.
A second suspect, Dkhari Wornum-Brown, 22, of Dorchester, was arrested Tuesday and arraigned on charges of first-degree murder and carrying an unlicensed firearm, the DA’s office said.
Prosecutors said Wornum-Brown was not the shooter, but that he was driving a scooter when the gunman jumped off the vehicle and fired 21 rounds into the group before fleeing on the scooter.
“The violent death of G’Kiyah Lewis is a societal tragedy,” DA Kevin Hayden said in a statement. “I’m grateful for the great investigative effort that brought someone forward to answer for this terrible crime and I urge the second suspect to turn himself in before he or anyone else gets hurt. I extend my deepest sympathies to G’Kiyah’s family and friends and our office will provide all the help and support they need as this case moves forward.”
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Boston Police Department’s homicide unit at 617-343-4470 or the CrimeStoppers Tip Line at 1-800-494-TIPS.
