Drivers should anticipate late-night delays near JFK/UMass for a couple of years.
Drivers traveling through Dorchester should expect overnight traffic impacts starting this spring as MassDOT begins a major repair project on Interstate 93 near the JFK/UMass MBTA station.
The $21 million project, which targets the I-93 viaduct and nearby ramps, received unanimous approval Wednesday from the MassDOT Board of Directors’ Capital Programs Committee, according to a WBZ report.
Construction is expected to continue through fall 2028, with traffic impacts primarily occurring overnight between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.
MassDOT said the project will include repairs and replacements to bridge joints, a full replacement of the roadway’s wearing surface, concrete deck patching, and repairs to bridge barriers and railings. Traffic control measures will be in place throughout construction, the agency said.
The work will be funded with federal money through the Highway Infrastructure Program.
Some construction will take place over MBTA tracks, and MassDOT is coordinating with the transit agency on permitting and operational restrictions, according to WBZ.
“This project was initiated to repair the deteriorated section of bridge deck and joints and eliminate water leak onto portions of the steel structure below,” MassDOT Deputy Chief Engineer of Project Development John Bechard told the State House News Service.
Bechard added that the project will also improve access to key destinations in the area. “The ramps included in the project lead to access to the John F. Kennedy Library, UMass, MBTA Red Line stops and other destinations,” he said.
