A former Patriot saw his season end during Week 2’s Thursday Night Football game against the Green Bay Packers.

Washington Commanders defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. suffered a season-ending left quad injury, which will require surgery, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Wise, 31, tried to block an extra point attempt in the second quarter when multiple opposing players rolled up on his leg.

Wise went down in pain immediately and appeared to be inconsolable and in pain as trainers attended to him on the field. He was eventually carted off the field after his teammates surrounded him in support.

The next day, Wise shared a positive message on Instagram and thanked fans for sending well wishes.

“I’m truly grateful for all the love, prayers, and support I’ve received,” Wise wrote. “This was an unfortunate experience, but when you give so much to the game and do everything you can to improve for yourself and for your team’s success, it can feel like there’s a lot to pray for. When you stop, it can feel like everything around you stops too.

“But I know the best healer. God only puts us through what we can handle, and every challenge carries a lesson. Out of every test comes growth, shaping us into who we need to become to accomplish the goals we set from the start.”

Wise entered 2025 as a nine-year NFL veteran. He spent the first eight years of his career in New England and was selected in the fourth round of the 2017 draft by the Patriots.

Wise and the Commanders agreed to a one-year, $3.25 million contract in March.
