New England Patriots
Law also shared a blunt take about NFL officiating.

Ty Law’s take on Drake Maye: Following the Patriots‘ recent run of success, the reputation of second-year New England quarterback Drake Maye continues to rise.
With his team holding a 4-2 record and back in first place for the first time in years, Maye has even been tentatively tied to MVP conversations. Former Patriots cornerback Ty Law, speaking during a recent interview on “The Greg Hill Show” on WEEI, offered his take on the matter.
“Too early,” Law quickly said of Maye’s MVP candidacy. Still, he has been undeniably impressed by the 23-year-old. He even compared Maye to Patriots legend Tom Brady in one specific way.
“He’s finding ways to get everybody involved,” Law said of Maye. “That’s the thing that I’m most impressed about. Not only his patience and how he’s handling himself in situations, he’s spreading the ball around. Again, it brings us back to Tom Brady as far as not having that premier wide receiver.
“He’s finding ways to win. So whoever’s open, [Maye’s] going to get you the ball. He’s making the right decisions, the right plays and that’s what you need as a quarterback.”
Law was Brady’s teammate during the early part of the Patriots’ dynasty, helping New England win three Super Bowls. During their shared tenure, Brady — as Law noted — did not have a traditional superstar wide receiver (as the acquisition of Randy Moss came after Law’s departure from the Patriots).
The other subplot that Law provided his opinion about was the officiating. Given the controversy from Sunday’s game (which included multiple polarizing calls from referees), he shared a terse assessment.
“Let’s keep it real. They’re human, but some of them stink,” said Law. “Some of them stink. I can’t get fined. We couldn’t say this while we were playing, but some need to go back to refereeing community college or something. I don’t get it. Whatever the college is for referees, I can’t get fined now so I’m enjoying talking about the lack of preparation sometimes. I understand it’s a hard game, but you’ve got all this technology now. You’ve got to use it, because some of those referees, I think they’re playing favoritism at times.”
Law stopped short of accusing officials of anything official nefarious, but closed by simply reaffirming, “They need to do better.”
Trivia: Ty Law had multiple interceptions in an NFL game seven times (including playoffs). The last time this happened was in Jan. 2007 while a member of the Chiefs. Can you name the opposing quarterback he intercepted twice that day?
(Answer at the bottom).
Hint: Law also picked off this quarterback three times in a playoff game in Jan. 2004.

From Sunday: More soundbites from the Patriots’ win in New Orleans against the Saints.
On this day: In 2013, Mike Napoli hit a solo home run off of Justin Verlander to give the Red Sox a crucial 1-0 win over the Tigers in Game 3 of the ALCS. John Lackey matched Verlander for 6.2 innings before Boston’s bullpen (highlights by Koji Uehara) closed it out.
Daily highlight: Boston.com’s own Khari Thompson offered a rare bright spot for Team Media in an otherwise savage rout imposed by the Celtics’ coaching staff on Wednesday. After Joe Mazzulla unceremoniously warned reporters that the previously scheduled “Media Game” would instead pit media against Boston’s coaching staff, he promptly led a ruthless full-court press that ended in a 57-4 destruction of local beat writers. Here are full highlights.
