‘A House of Dynamite’ (2025)

As is often the case in movies directed by Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker,” “Zero Dark Thirty”), every decision (and every second) counts in “A House of Dynamite,” a political thriller about a team of government officials dealing with an unidentified missile hurtling toward the U.S.

We see the action unfold from multiple perspectives, bouncing from Rebecca Ferguson and Jason Clarke in the Situation Room to a remote military base overseen by Anthony Ramos all the way to Air Force One, where President Idris Elba is being whisked away to a secure location. Even though nearly everyone is responding calmly and competently in the face of crisis, you’ll be on the edge of your seat.

‘I’m Not There’ (2007)

I regret to inform you that I found the new Bruce Springsteen biopic, “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere,” to be a bit of a slog. (You can read my full review here, or read a slightly different take from my Springsteen superfan colleague.) Luckily, there are plenty of great music biopics available to watch this weekend, including this 2007 take on the life of Bob Dylan.

The 2024 Dylan biopic “‘A Complete Unknown’ makes clear that the man once known as Robert Zimmerman is an enigma who tries on different personas like a new pair of sunglasses. Todd Haynes’ experimental, nonlinear 2007 film literalizes that quality, casting six different actors (including Oscar winners Cate Blanchett, Heath Ledger, and Christian Bale) to play abstract representations of six different phases of Dylan’s life.

Weapons‘ (2025)

One of the best horror movies of 2025 is headed to HBO Max after a surprisingly strong run at the summer box office. The film, directed by Zach Cregger (“Barbarian”) is about a small Pennsylvania town where 17 children climb out of their beds and disappear in the middle of the night.

The tragedy defies explanation, leading the townspeople to seek comfort in conspiracy theories and scapegoats — including the kids’ teacher, played by Julia Garner, and the lone student from her class who didn’t vanish at 2:17 a.m.

‘Talamasca: The Secret Order’

Following the success of Anne Rice’s “Interview With the Vampire,” AMC has begun building an entire Rice universe, including this spinoff series about a secret society, The Talamasca, who watch over the witches, demons, and vampires that populate the gothic horror author’s works.

The Talamasca first showed up in the second season of “Interview With the Vampire,” and pull characters from that series into their world — including Woburn native Eric Bogosian as Daniel Molloy, the journalist who chronicles the vampire’s activities.

‘Nobody Wants This‘ Season 2

With so many horror, thriller, and horror-thriller recommendations this week, how about something lighter? This hit romcom series, which returned to Netflix for Season 2 on Thursday, is about a rabbi (Adam Brody, “The O.C.”) and a gentile podcaster (Kristen Bell, “Veronica Mars”) who begin dating, despite the skepticism of their families, friends, and complete strangers.

Season 1 chronicled the early stages of their relationship, as the duo got past the awkward questions (“Can Rabbis have sex”) and into the honeymoon phase. Season 2 raises the thornier questions, including marriage, kids, and *gulp* religious conversion.
