A driver and her passenger were seriously injured Tuesday and two dogs in their vehicle ultimately died after their minivan crashed into a concrete barrier at the F.E. Everett Turnpike toll plaza in Bedford, New Hampshire.

The crash occurred shortly after 9 a.m. as Cheryl North, 76, of Manchester, was driving a 2023 Chrysler Pacifica south on the highway and veered before hitting the barrier, according to New Hampshire State Police.

North and a man riding in the minivan were transported from the scene with life-threatening injuries, police said. The two dogs were pronounced dead after being taken by animal control officers to a local veterinarian; a third dog in the vehicle survived.

The crash remains under investigation. However, police said “speed appears to be a factor.”
