Southeastern Massachusetts is set to gain two new supermarkets at shuttered retail locations.

On Thursday, Big Y announced that it’s opening grocery stores in Fairhaven and North Dartmouth. One market will be located at Fairhaven Plaza in a building formerly occupied by Big Lots. In North Dartmouth, a market will open at the former location of a Christmas Tree Shops store in Faunce Corner Center. Both retailers went out of business after filing for bankruptcy in recent years.

The two new Big Y markets are expected to open in the spring or summer of 2027, according to a press release.

Founded in 1936 in Chicopee, most Big Ys are located in Western Massachusetts, with dozens throughout Connecticut. But the company also operates 10 stores in central and eastern Massachusetts. New locations opened in Uxbridge and Westboro this year.

Big Y representatives said the new South Coast locations will continue the company’s commitment to growth and community connection, and “reflect the company’s dedication to providing fresh, local products and exceptional customer experiences.”

“These new stores will allow us to better serve families in the South Coast region,” said Mathieu L. D’Amour, Big Y’s Vice President of Real Estate and Development. “We look forward to bringing Big Y’s quality, convenience and community focus to Fairhaven, North Dartmouth and surrounding communities.”

The company said that more details, including hiring and grand opening events, will be shared in the coming months.
