Another global gastronomy award has recognized a storied restaurant in Boston known for serving New England seafood for nearly two centuries.

Union Oyster House in Downtown Boston was named North America’s Best Landmark Restaurant for 2025 as part of the annual World Culinary Awards.

The restaurant known for its clam chowder and location on Freedom Trail competed against other well-known restaurants in the U.S. and Canada, including another New England entry, White Horse Tavern in Newport, Rhode Island.

It makes sense Union Oyster House would be recognized for its landmark status. The restaurant is one of the oldest restaurants in the country, claiming to be the oldest continually operating eatery. Many dignitaries have been known to dine there, including multiple U.S. presidents

Open since 1826, Union Oyster House will also celebrate a major milestone next year, its bicentennial.

“I am deeply honored to receive this award on behalf of the Union Oyster House staff and our faithful patrons,” Union Oyster House owner Joe Milano said in a press release. “We are pleased to have received this award in 2020, 2024, and now in 2025 and are grateful to be considered a legend.”

This year marked the sixth annual World Culinary Awards, held in Italy. The awards are given out to restaurants that are the best in the world as well as best within global regions, from North America and Latin America to Africa, Asia, and Europe.

It is the sister awards program to the World Travel Awards, which began in 1994.
