“Playing for a sports team in Boston, that’s enough said right there.”

Boston Legacy FC stayed local with the signing of Whitman-Hanson and Boston College graduate Sammy Smith, the club’s 17th signing ahead of its inaugural season.
Smith will join the club in January on a two-year deal as a free agent from Icelandic club Breiðablik, where she has played the past two seasons.
“Playing for a sports team in Boston, that’s enough said right there,” Smith said in a release. “That’s a dream come true, to be able to play in front of my friends and family after living abroad for a couple years. I’m just so excited to be a part of something so special, especially in the first year of this club, and to play for Boston. It’s surreal.”
Smith, 24, grew up in Hanson and played for venerated club South Shore Select before playing four seasons at BC.
The forward was named to the All-ACC freshman team after starting all 18 games and leading the Eagles with eight goals.
In all, she was BC’s leading scorer in three seasons, finishing with 26 goals in 72 games before using her fifth year of eligibility to transfer to Texas A&M, where she scored three goals and led the team with seven assists in 22 games in 2023.
Smith began her professional career in 2024 with Iceland’s second-division club FHL, winning the league trophy and scoring 15 goals in 14 games before going on loan to first-division Breiðablik through the end of the season, where she achieved the rare feat of winning league titles in both divisions in the same year after scoring nine goals in seven games with the first-division club.
She then scored 12 goals in 24 games the following season to help Breiðablik repeat as league champion.
“That experience has helped shape her game, and she’s been a key contributor for Breiðablik in Iceland, scoring consistently and competing for trophies,” Boston Legacy general manager Domè Guasch said in a release.
“She’s a versatile forward with a natural instinct for goal, and her Boston roots bring an edge and authenticity that align well with the culture we’re building. We’re excited to welcome her home and see her make an impact here in Boston.”
The Legacy will play the majority of their home games during the inaugural season at Gillette Stadium as renovations continue on White Stadium, but due to scheduling conflicts brought on by the men’s World Cup, the team also will play a select number of games at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket, R.I.
The Legacy’s home opener is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on March 14, 2026, at Gillette Stadium. Venue assignments for the remaining 29 games will be made when the league releases the full schedule.
