Morning Sports Update
Mayer wore No. 39 in his rookie season.

Marcelo Mayer’s new number: Fittingly, the Red Sox appear to be closing out 2025 by officially turning the page on Rafael Devers.
The former Boston slugger was notably traded to the Giants in June. His jersey number (No. 11) remained vacant for the remainder of the season. But as of an official update to the team’s roster that was noticed on Tuesday, it appears there is a new Red Sox No. 11.
Marcelo Mayer, one of the top prospects in Boston’s system in 2025, is now listed on the Red Sox website as the team’s No. 11. Mayer wore No. 39 during his rookie season.
Drafted fourth overall by the Red Sox in 2021, Mayer hit .228 with four home runs and a .674 OPS in the first 44 games of his MLB career. Prior to that, he totaled a .271 average with an .818 OPS in 43 games at the triple-A level.
Exactly where Mayer fits into Boston’s 2026 lineup remains to be seen. The ongoing free agent status of third baseman Alex Bregman will have a major impact.
Trivia: Two other Red Sox players who have worn No. 11 also threw no-hitters. Can you name those pitchers?
(Answer at the bottom).
Hint: One did so in 2001, his only season with the Red Sox. The other did so in 2007 (he actually wore No. 61 for that game, donning No. 11 from 2010-2016).

A striking tribute: A fan of the Democratic Republic of Congo at the Africa Cup of Nations has gone viral for his unique decision to pose as a perfectly still statue for 90 minutes. This has been an ongoing tribute to Patrice Lumumba, the country’s first prime minister, who was assassinated in 1961.
DR Congo won the game against Botswana 3-0, and finished the group stage undefeated (two wins, one draw). They will face Algeria in the Round of 16.
On this day: In 2021, the Celtics defeated the Suns 123-108. The story of the game was Robert Williams, who posted a triple-double (10 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists). Williams also added five blocks and two steals to round out a career night.
Daily highlight: Jaden Richardson made one of the best catches of the bowl season, though USC lost in the end to TCU, 30-27.
