Maynard police, fire crews save dog from ‘owner’s worst nightmare’

Emergency crews leaped into action when they got a call that a dog had fallen through a hole in the ice of a Maynard pond.

Police and fire crews in Maynard worked together Tuesday night to rescue a furry friend who fell through a hole in the ice.

Just after 9 p.m., the Maynard Fire and Police Departments responded to Mill Pond after a resident reported that their dog, Rufus, had fallen through the ice, according to a joint statement. Police officers launched a drone to guide fire crews as they made the rescue.

The firefighters made quick work of their mission, and Rufus was safe on land again within ten minutes, according to the statement. The chilly canine returned home that night without any serious injuries.

“A pet falling through the water, in these freezing conditions, is any pet owner’s worst nightmare,” Maynard Fire Chief Angela Lawless said in the statement. “This could’ve been far more serious if Rufus was in the water for a long period of time, but our crews made sure that would not be the case. We are confident Rufus will make a full recovery.”
