MassDOT originally expected the repairs to cause “extended detours.”
The Route 107 bridge over the river between Saugus and Lynn reopened ahead of schedule after closing due to emergency repairs earlier this week, transportation officials announced.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) said that crews had completed repairs and the bridge had fully reopened to traffic around noon on Friday. The temporary drawbridge closed on Wednesday night for emergency repairs after inspectors discovered cracking on the bridge’s deck panel assemblies, according to a MassDOT advisory.
The repairs came faster than expected. Transportation officials originally said the bridge would be closed “until further notice” and warned of “extended detours.”
In a statement announcing the bridge’s reopening, MassDOT said, “During the closure, crews worked around the clock to replace or repair 16 affected deck panel assemblies. MassDOT appreciates the patience of Lynn and Saugus residents impacted by the bridge closure.”
The temporary drawbridge was constructed to carry traffic over the river while the aging Belden G. Bly Bridge, also known as the Fox Hill Bridge, is being rebuilt. The multi-year project includes new lanes, improved drainage, and updated safety features. It’s expected to be finished by March 2026.
