After reviewing security footage, the police determined their story was fabricated, and the couple admitted to lying, a local paper reported.

A couple who claimed to have found a dog that had been abandoned in a cage on the side of a road last week made the story up, police told a local newspaper.
The couple left the dog with an employee in Seasons Corner Market in Attleboro just before 2 a.m. Monday, police previously said. A customer offered to take the dog overnight, and the manager reported the incident to police.
The couple told the market clerk Monday that the 6-month-old Yorkshire terrier was in a cage “on the side of the road and (they) did not know what to do with it,” police said.
The cage had a dog bed, a blanket, a pink dog dish, and a small sign that said “free,” the Chronicle reported at the time. Attleboro Police Chief Kyle Heagney initially said the department wanted public assistance to find the owner.
However, after reviewing security footage and interviewing the couple, the police determined their story was fabricated, and the couple admitted to lying, Heagney reportedly said. The wife had reportedly agreed to adopt the dog and took it home before her husband refused.
The dog is currently in custody of the city’s animal shelter. The couple won’t be facing any animal cruelty charges, police told the Chronicle.
“We appreciate animal control and their assistance in housing the dog. … The good news is there’s been an overwhelming amount of support from the public in wanting to adopt this dog,” Heagney told the Chronicle Thursday. “Our goal now is to find this dog a loving home.”
Heagney did not return a request for information Sunday night.
