Former Patriots quarterback Cam Newton is skeptical about the staying power of the Patriots’ winning success.

New England is an NFL-best 9-2 and riding an eight game win streak. But, Newton said that the Patriots have “fools gold” written all over them.

He even compared the team to cubic zirconia, a synthetic material that looks similar to a diamond.

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, who grew up in the Charlotte area and has mentioned being a fan of Newton on multiple occasions, brushed off the remarks during a recent appearance on WEEI Afternoons.

“I don’t even know what show he’s on,” Maye said. “I think they get paid to make remarks and make certain comments.”

“I’m just worried about what people in our organization think, and worry about (what) we think and what my teammates think. People are going to have different opinions. I’m just going out there on Sunday and worrying about ourselves.”

Patriots coach Mike Vrabel struck a similar tone during his appearance on WEEI, saying he had no issue with Newton’s comments.

“Nothing is weird to me because people can come on the radio, TV, and you know whatever, it’s just things that get their attention. We’re OK with it. I promise you we are OK with it. Anything that anybody says, we are OK with.

“We are going to come to work, we’re going to focus on us, we’re going to try to improve and we’re going to focus on the Bengals and going on the road and try to get our tenth win. That’s what we’re going to focus on.”

Maye is leading the NFL in passing yards (2,836). He’s second in completion percentage (71.9) and quarterback rating (113.2). He’s fourth in passing touchdowns (20).

But the stat he’s fixated on the most, he said, is wins.

“I just hope to be at the top in wins, that’s the biggest thing,” Maye said. “I’m just trying to win. I think all that other stuff comes after that. Part of the reason is probably because we haven’t had a bye yet. Just focused on one week at a time and I think a lot of players are doing a lot of great things to help me and our defense is playing great, so it’s been fun and we’ve got to keep going.
