It’s the only New England spot to earn a place on Eater’s list of 15 best new restaurants in the U.S.

Eater has released their annual list of the 15 best new restaurants in America, and a Portland, Maine eatery is the only New England spot to make the cut.

Luncheonette, a husband-and-wife-run restaurant that opened in June, celebrated the recognition on Instagram on Nov. 19. “We really love what we are doing at Luncheonette and are so happy that other people do, too,” the owners wrote.

Founded by Angela Lee and Alex LeBlanc, Luncheonette describes itself as a “scratch restaurant” where everything is made in-house using locally sourced ingredients where possible, according to the website. The restaurant operates out of a 100-plus-year old space at 147 Cumberland Ave., offering classic lunch options like sandwiches and salads alongside more adventurous dishes.

Eater spotlighted Luncheonette for its “eclectic choices” and focus on exceptional, flavor-forward dishes. The publication highlighted standouts such as baba ganoush with roasted eggplants, coriander, fennel, tahini, Champagne vinegar, lemon, and olive oil; a roasted koginut squash pavê with Parmesan bechamel and Fresno pepper; and sandwiches that use sourdough Pullman-style bread layered with miso-marinated pork, Thai basil relish, Kewpie mayo, and mozzarella.

Maine diners, Eater noted, have been especially drawn to dishes like vegetables dressed in gochujang and sesame, bibimbap fortified with za’atar tofu, and celery root remoulade — nods to Lee’s Korean American heritage, according to Eater.

“Thank you @eater for the incredibly unexpected and wonderful news … We can’t believe little old Luncheonette could resonate like this,” the restaurant wrote in its Instagram post.

Luncheonette serves breakfast, lunch, pastries, coffee, beer, and wine. They’re open Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Sunday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
