Cengage Group has based its corporate headquarters in Boston since 2014, with offices downtown and in the Seaport.

Cengage Group, an education technology firm with a headquarters across from Boston City Hall, is embracing a fully remote workforce and closing its Boston, Detroit, and Cincinnati offices, according to Boston Business Journal.
Officials said the company will close its location at 3 Center Plaza and its space at 200 Pier 4 Blvd. in the Seaport District. The company is currently “in the process of evaluating our go-forward plans for office space,” according to a statement obtained by Boston Business Journal.
Cengage, which provides millions of students with digital products and services, has grown into one of the largest edtech companies in the world, according to the company’s website. The company has nearly 4,000 employees serving an estimated 90 million students in 125 countries.
In 2014, the company moved its corporate headquarters from Stamford, Conn. to Boston at the Channel Center in Fort Point, Boston Business Journal reported. Five years later, just before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, it moved to its Pier 4 Boulevard space and soon started operating fully remotely.
The company now subleases the space, and its only remaining domestic location is in Independence, Ky., according to its website. As of 2024, the company has also started integrating generative AI solutions into its learning platforms.
“This transition will allow us to better align our physical footprint with the needs of our people and the future of work, while continuing to deliver exceptional value to the learners and educators we serve,” the company said in a statement to the Cincinnati Business Courier.
