Eight other Massachusetts communities were in the top 50 nationwide.

Greater Boston is home to two of the three “safest and richest” towns in the country, according to a report last month by GoBankingRates.

Based on the top 1,000 municipalities with the highest average household income, GoBankingRates utilized property and violent crime data to determine the safest and wealthiest communities to live in.

Lexington came in second place with a property crime rate of 2.937 and a violent crime rate of 0.294, both per 1,000 people, just behind No. 1 Western Springs, Illinois.

Winchester ranked third on the list, and second in the state, with a property crime rate of 4.029 and a violent crime rate of 0.221.

Eight other Massachusetts communities landed on the top-50 list: Wellesley (14), Belmont (26), Reading (29), Sharon (37), Hopkinton (39), Newton (40), Needham (41), and Brookline (49).
