Diggs was being modest about how comfortable he is within the Patriots’ offense, McDaniels said.

FOXBOROUGH — Stefon Diggs took a humble approach to a question about how comfortable he is within the Patriots’ offense after his first 100-yard game of the season on Sunday.
“Five out of 10,” he said, shrugging his shoulders. “Take it with a grain of salt, obviously, having success is week-to-week … being comfortable is a state of mind. I’ve still got to study, I’ve still got to flip the pages, I’ve still got to grind.
“So, being comfortable in the offense is like, you’re making your coach comfortable, you’re making plays, you’re getting open, you’re showing that you know what to do on a consistent basis, and you’re making plays for your quarterback, and it helps everybody out.”
Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels slipped in a joke about Diggs’s comments during his press conference on Thursday.
“Probably like a nine out of 10,” McDaniels said with a wink. “In terms of understanding the system and the scheme, you’ve probably got a little bit of juice left to squeeze out of the orange.”
“Obviously, it’s important, and I think he was being modest when he said that. I heard that little comment.”
Coach Mike Vrabel also had some fun responding to Diggs’s comments during a recent interview on WEEI.
“He should study more,” Vrabel said. “Five out of 10, we need to get going. I’ll have to talk to Stef. Five out of 10? I went to Ohio State. That’s failing.”
“We’ll have to clarify what part was 50 percent. We have to have a winning effort, physically, mentally, and whatever the third one was. We’ll have to bump it up a little bit to see what was going on.”
Diggs clarified his comments before practice on Wednesday while speaking to reporters at his locker.
“When I said it was a five out of 10, obviously, I was being facetious or sarcastic in a way,” Diggs said. “Just because I never want to get too comfortable. I said 5 out of 10, because if it’s eight out of 10, or nine out of 10, now I don’t really have to look at my notes or look over it multiple times.”
“For me, I just try to keep it at a comfort level of being hungry and humble every week,” he added. “Not going in thinking I’ve got it all figured out, because that offense does throw some curveballs at you.”
