The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded a nationwide recall of potentially radioactive frozen shrimp, including brands sold in Massachusetts.

The recall now includes Southwind Foods products sold in Massachusetts and nine other states under various brand names, including Sand Bar, Best Yet, Arctic Shores, Great American, and First Street. The products were distributed between July 17 and Aug. 8 and have “best-by” dates that extend into 2027, the FDA said

Recalls have also been issued for AquaStar cocktail shrimp, sold at Walmart between July 31 and Aug. 16 in 28 states, and Kroger’s Mercado shrimp, sold between July 24 and Aug. 11 in 17 states—though neither brand was sold in Massachusetts.

The notice follows Walmart’s recent recall of frozen, raw shrimp sold in 13 states due to the presence of radioactive isotope Cesium-137 in shipping containers from Indonesia.

Officials said the contamination levels aren’t immediately harmful, but warned that repeated exposure could increase long-term cancer risks. The FDA and U.S. Customs are working with Indonesian regulators to trace the source.

“Consumers who have purchased the recalled frozen shrimp should not consume the product and should dispose of the product or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund,” FDA officials wrote on the recall notice.

Officials are urging consumers to check the FDA’s website for the full list of recalled products.
