The Red Sox’ 2025 season is still ongoing, but the team’s already making some plans for 2026. Well, at least from a front office standpoint.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has prioritized trying to find a general manager who’ll serve as a second-in-command this offseason, WEEI’s Rob Bradford reported.

The general manager position has been vacant since Breslow was hired to run the Red Sox’ baseball operations ahead of the 2024 season. However, the general manager position for the Red Sox has had a lesser influence in recent years compared to the early seasons of John Henry’s ownership. Their last two general managers, Mike Hazen and Brian O’Halloran, were second-in-command to Dave Dombrowski and Chaim Bloom, respectively.

O’Halloran was removed as the team’s general manager when Bloom was fired in September 2023. But he wound up getting reassigned in the Red Sox’ front office, becoming their executive vice president of baseball operations.

That reassignment took place before Breslow ran an audit of the Red Sox’ front office in 2024, though. Breslow’s audit reportedly caused the team to relieve several longtime employees of their duties, while some others wound up resigning.

As there have been a lot of changes to the Red Sox’ front office, the team employs a lot of assistant general managers, with each feasibly being a possible candidate to become the next general manager. Raquel Ferreira, Eddie Romero, Michael Groopman, Taylor Smith, and Paul Toboni are the five members of the Red Sox’ front office who have an assistant general manager title.

Ferreira is the longest-tenured person of that group, working with the Red Sox for the last 27 seasons. She became an assistant general manager in 2019. Rombero was promoted to assistant general manager after the 2018 season and is in his 20th season with the Red Sox.

Smith, meanwhile, was hired from the Rays last offseason and Toboni is a candidate to become the Nationals’ next general manager, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported. Unlike with the Red Sox, that role with the Nationals would make Toboni the lead decision maker in the front office.
