Lucas Giolito’s impressive start: Boston starting pitcher Lucas Giolito improved to 9-2 on Tuesday with the 5-0 Red Sox win over the Orioles.
For Giolito, 31, it represents the latest step in his comeback effort in 2025. After missing all of the previous season due to an elbow procedure, the former White Sox right-hander now has a 3.47 ERA and is settling into a role as the team’s third starter.
On Tuesday in Baltimore, Giolito pitched eight innings of scoreless baseball, striking out eight in the process.
“I’m having a blast right now with these guys,” Giolito told reporters, per MLB.com’s Ian Browne. “Every single game matters. So it just kind of adds that extra edge each time you take the ball, especially the way our rotation has been going. It adds extra motivation to keep up and keep putting up good performances.”
The veteran starter wanted the complete game, but settled for eight innings (and the win).
“Finished on a high note, and luckily, we were able to score a few more runs there and keep Chappy out of it, which was good,” he said, referencing the day off the team was able to give closer Aroldis Chapman. “Give him an off-day.”
And as much as he wanted the complete game, Giolito also acknowledged he was aiming higher. Aug. 25 (a day earlier) is the anniversary of only MLB no-hitter against the Pirates in 2020.
“It’s pretty cool,” Giolito said. “Yesterday, I saw online that people were saying it was the anniversary, so I wanted to come out and … you can’t expect a no-hitter. But I was trying [for one]. I tried as hard as I could. It’s very hard to pull off. You have to get lucky. But, yeah, overall, a solid [night].”
With the win, the Red Sox stayed a half-game in front of the Yankees in the leading American League wild card spot.
