Police say the teen ran a red light before colliding with a car in a Milford intersection.
A 15-year-old is facing multiple traffic charges after a suped-up e-bike he was driving collided with a vehicle in a Milford intersection, authorities said.
The incident happened on Tuesday at the intersection of Main and Exchange Streets, according to the Milford Police Department. The teen allegedly ran a red light and was hit by a car that was making a left turn, according to officials. Police did not release information about whether the teen was injured.
Milford police shared a video of the incident on Facebook, warning of the dangers of modified e-bikes on public streets. The video shows the teen colliding with the car, then being flung to the ground and rolling to the side. The car is seen driving over the e-bike, crushing it.
“On [Tuesday], we responded to another example of the perils of riding an E-Bike and lack of safety awareness by riders. The juvenile operator of the e-bike has been charged with numerous infractions,” police said in the post.
“If he didn’t roll out of the way after he fell, he would have been completely run over by that motorist,” Milford Police Chief Robert Tusino told 7 News.
Tusino told the news outlet that the bike had been modified to travel faster, which he says is a growing problem in Milford.
“They’re riding them on the sidewalks, which they’re not supposed to, they’re not obeying any of the traffic laws, which is what happened in this case, the young juvenile ignored the red light,” Tusino told 7 News. “I’ve had this happen more than once where the person driving the automobile, even though they did nothing wrong, it’s life-changing for them. They’re beside themselves.”
Police said the driver of the car will not face charges.
