Massachusetts tweens may need to find another spot for jewelry and ear-piercings — Claire’s is closing six of its 17 Massachusetts stores after it filed for bankruptcy this month.
The chain is shuttering 291 store locations across the country as part of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. It will keep 830 stores open, according to Aug. 20 court documents.
Claire’s announced Aug. 20 it reached a deal with private holding company Ames Watson, and as a part of the agreement it “paused the liquidation process at a significant number of stores.”
“As we continue through our restructuring proceedings, our team has worked tirelessly to explore every option for preserving the value of the Claire’s business and brand,” said Claire’s CEO Chris Cramer.
Ames Watson said it aims to preserve Claire’s legacy.
“Claire’s has built a powerful emotional connection with generations of consumers through its focus on self-expression, creativity, and accessible fashion. We are committed to investing in its future by preserving a significant retail footprint across North America,” said Co-Founder Lawrence Berger.
Claire’s also filed for bankruptcy in 2018, when it had about 1,600 U.S. locations and nearly 2,500 worldwide, according to the Boston Business Journal.
Six Claire’s stores are closing in Massachusetts:
- Northborough Crossing, Northborough
- Cambridgeside, Cambridge
- Emerald Square, North Attleboro
- Solomon Pond Mall, Berlin
- Northshore Mall, Peabody
- Downtown Crossing, Boston
Eleven Massachusetts locations are remaining open:
- Lee Premium Outlets, Lee
- Auburn Mall, Auburn
- Burlington Mall, Burlington
- South Shore Plaza, Braintree
- Westgate Mall, Brockton
- Holyoke Mall, Holyoke
- Square One Mall, Saugus
- Natick Mall, Natick
- Dartmouth Mall, Dartmouth
- Cape Cod Mall, Hyannis
- Wrentham Village Premium Outlets, Wrentham
