Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story put himself in rare company on Tuesday night at Fenway Park.

The 32-year-old infielder successfully stole two bases in Boston’s 2-1 loss to the A’s — making him a perfect 30-for-30 on stolen-base attempts so far this year.

According to the Red Sox, Story is just the fourth player since MLB’s expansion era (1961) to go a perfect 30-for-30 on swiped bags to open a season — joining a group that includes Trea Turner (2023), Carl Crawford (2009), and Vince Coleman (1989).

Turner stands as the only one to close out a season without getting caught. Story could set a new MLB record for the most successful stolen bases in a season without getting caught if he swipes one more bag over Boston’s final 11 regular-season games — and avoids getting tagged out, of course.

Story’s efficient work on the basepaths has been one of the highlights in what has been a bounce-back season for the veteran infielder.

He was one of the few bright spots on an otherwise miserable night for Boston’s bats on Tuesday — going 3-for-4 at the plate with his two stolen bases. In 147 games this season, Story is batting .265 with 24 home runs and 91 RBI.

“He’s a guy that is using the whole field, even with two strikes. Obviously, the instincts — running the bases, that’s incredible,” Alex Cora said postgame of Story. “You go, you’re safe.  It has to be a great feeling. He’s playing good baseball. He’s having a great September, offensively, defensively, running bases, and we’re very happy for him.”

Story’s blend of speed and pop at the plate has also put him in a small group within Red Sox team history.

He is one of just four players in franchise history to record at least 20 home runs and 30 stolen bases in the same season, joining Jarren Duran (2024), Mookie Betts (2018), and Jacoby Ellsbury (2011).

It will be cool to look at after the season, but right now it’s all about winning. … It’s not about a streak, it’s about winning games and whatever I can do to help the team win,” Story said postgame.
