A Foxborough man who died in a house fire early Tuesday morning has been identified, officials said.

George Schubert, 81, was killed in the fire, according to the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office. He was the sole resident of the house where the fire occurred.

Schubert’s dog also died in the blaze, which broke out on Granite Street at about 3 a.m., according to fire officials. The Foxborough Fire Department responded to the home after a town police officer smelled smoke in the area.

When they arrived, the house was already consumed “with flames venting through the windows,” fire officials said. Firefighters from Mansfield and Plainville also came to the scene to help extinguish the flames.

Within an hour, they had put the fire out, but the home sustained serious damage, according to fire officials. After searching inside, they found Schubert and his dog dead.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials said.
